We’re excited to announce a significant development for Eagle Mine, made possible through our partnership with Revex Technologies. A recent $145 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) was awarded to Revex Technologies for the REV Nickel Project. Eagle Mine plays a pivotal role in this innovative effort, which could have lasting benefits for our operations, workforce, and the local economy.

The grant announcement is the culmination of multiple years of ongoing research by Michigan Tech University and Eagle Mine, owned and operated by Lundin Mining. This partnership resulted in the creation of a new startup company, Revex Technologies, in 2023.

The award is subject to several terms and conditions that will need to be negotiated and finalized prior to funds being made available. In the coming months, we will work closely with Revex and the DOE to finalize the terms of the grant and complete the necessary regulatory and project design work. It’s a long road, but one that we hope will lead to a brighter future for Eagle Mine and our community.

The REV Nickel Project is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at producing nickel concentrate and other critical minerals from metal-bearing waste streams, such as discarded mine tailings and spent lithium-ion batteries. Our involvement in this project not only aligns with our commitment to sustainability but also secures Eagle Mine’s future as a leading source of U.S.-produced critical minerals.

As part of this initiative, Eagle Mine and Revex Technologies will collaborate on the construction and operation of three related facilities in Marquette County. The Eagle Paste Facility will process mine waste from our operations, converting it into paste backfill and nickel iron sulfide, which will then be further processed at Revex’s reClaim facility to produce high-quality nickel concentrate. Meanwhile, the reCover facility will extract valuable metals like cobalt, nickel, and lithium from spent lithium-ion batteries, advancing cutting-edge recycling technology in our region.

The project is expected to add approximately 115 new jobs, retain 425 jobs at Eagle Mine, and support 360 construction jobs over the 2-year construction period. Eagle Mine and Revex Technologies have been working with the Upper Peninsula Construction Council (UPCC) and the Michigan Building & Construction Trades Council (MBCTC) to ensure local labor is used during construction.

As we move forward, the success of the REV Nickel Project will be instrumental in extending the life of Eagle Mine. This project allows us to continue contributing to the national effort to secure critical minerals while advancing sustainable mining practices through the recovery of valuable resources from waste streams.

Although there is still much to accomplish, this partnership demonstrates our commitment to a sustainable, long-term future for Eagle Mine and the Upper Peninsula. We are proud to be part of an initiative that could not only benefit our local economy but also position Eagle Mine as a key player in the future of U.S. mineral production. We look forward to sharing more updates as the project progresses.
