STEM Inspiration: Meet Brooke, Environmental & Civil Engineer

Eagle Mine Team

She meticulously stacks each brick, one piece at a time, until she’s satisfied her with her masterpiece. When she is finished, it’s time to build the campfire, again one brick at a time.

Camping. It was one of Brooke Routhier’s favorite childhood memories with her grandparents. She loved camping with them so much that she would build campers and camping trailers with her LEGO® bricks as a child.

Today, Brooke continues to build things as the project engineer for the Eagle Mine, located in Marquette County, Michigan, and Humboldt Mill capital projects. Hired in January 2018, Brooke brings with her previous work experience as a consulting engineer helping with environmental remediation and with municipal projects. In her 13 years working in mining, she has held positions ranging from managing tailings and water, process engineering, and was operations manager for the Cleveland Cliffs Empire Mine plant before its idle.

Curiosity and the desire to make things function better is the primary motivation in her work.

In high school, Brooke’s Biology teacher, Mr. Miljour, noticed her love of math and science, and her curiosity, and he suggested engineering as a career field.

“Engineering is a great field for people who are curious and want to understand how things work. I would tell anyone who likes their math and science classes to keep taking more of them.

Brooke also recommends signing up for STEM or engineering programs, which many colleges and universities offer during the summer.

STEM programs give children and young adults more exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math. These programs equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to be innovative and imaginative thinkers.

LEGO® bricks are a STEM toy that children can use to sharpen their learning skills and have fun at the same time. When Brooke was building campers out of LEGO® bricks as a child, she was developing vital skills – social, emotional, and intellectual. These skills laid a foundation that has seen her through to where she is today.

Like Brooke, we want each child to have the opportunity to learn to be creative and innovative through the act of play. We hope to encourage this by giving away more than 100 mining-themed LEGO® sets!
